What's in a name?

How WRITE! became Dear Writing became Restorative Writing became WRITE! CLUB

Hello, writing friends,

Did you manage to get outside and see the full moon over the past couple of days? I’d almost forgotten that it was coming – and when I realised, it began to make sense of the huge surge of creativity and ‘getting things done’-ness that I’ve been feeling over the last week or so.

On Saturday morning, I woke up with the beginnings of a heavy cold and so I made a nest in my bed, grabbed my laptop and set about renovating this space for us.

For a while now, I’ve been feeling really unsure about the direction I wanted to take here on Substack. I have to be honest. The introduction of Notes and Chat made Substack feel like a very noisy and distracting place.

Our live Writing Together sessions on Zoom have always felt the opposite of noisy. They are nourishing spaces of deep calm and companionship. I love them.

But the rest of this Substack thing? Well, I wasn’t really sure where it was going. I worried that I couldn’t keep up. That to be on Substack would mean doing all the things on Substack.

But this morning I woke up with a very clear thought, which was that, of course, I can make this space whatever we need it to be!

(Sometimes, it takes me a while…)

And so I set about creating a smaller space within the bigger Substack space. I wanted to make a space for us that feels a little bit like the times when my sister and I would crawl under the bed covers with our torches and hold whispered conversations in the orange glow.

I’d like this space to feel like a soft blanket and your favourite mug. I’d like it to inspire you – perhaps even challenge you – to make the things with words that you want and need to make, but in the gentlest and most supportive way possible.

I’ve worked on this over the weekend and now WRITE! CLUB is born. So yes, I’ve renamed the space again. 😀😱 I hope those of you who have lived though all the previous incarnations won’t mind too much.

This is me trying to make a space that feels like the right shape for what I love doing best, alongside my own writing, which is this thing that is sometimes so hard to name but feels something like holding spaces for personal exploration through creative writing.

I hope that WRITE! CLUB, as I continue to build it with you, will feel like the right fit for you too. (I’m not sure that Restorative Writing felt quite right.) 😀

Right now, I’m decorating it with twinkly lights in preparation for our solstice live Zoom session on Saturday 21 December 4pm GMT. I hope you’ll join us, if you can. It was such a lovely get-together last year.

As the year turns, we’ll be thinking about what we’d like to let go of and also what we’d like to turn towards, celebrate, invite in.

You’ll find the Zoom link below and, for paid members, on our new Secret Pinboard, which I’ve hung from the menu here. I’ll keep the Pinboard updated with dates and links for all our other sessions throughout 2025.

One more thing.

You may notice that I’ve made a change to my pricing on my subscriber page. However, if you’re an existing paid subscriber, don’t worry. You’ll continue to pay the price you subscribed with.

All paid WRITE! CLUB members will now receive:

★ A MONTHLY VIDEO full of inspiration and a guided WRITING PROMPT.

★ Your invitation to a live WRITE! TOGETHER session on Zoom every other month. (This will be February, April, June, August, Oct, Dec in 2025.)

★ PLUS lots more opportunity for community sharing in the comments + all the resources in my packed Archives.

★ BONUS: You’ll still also have access to the two mini-courses, CREATIVE REST and RESTORATIVE WRITING CORE PRACTICES. Just click on the MINI COURSES tab on the home page to find these.

Thank you so much for being here with me. 🌸

I look forward to welcoming you on Saturday 21 Dec at 4pm GMT.
