Hello, dear writing friends,
Spring is springing, here in the North of England. Fat green buds have appeared overnight on my favourite hydrangeas. Our family of blackbirds have returned to nest in the hedge.
Even with all that is happening in our world, the great circle of life continues. As David Hockney, a fellow citizen of Yorkshire, reminded us in April 2020, ‘they can’t cancel spring.’
I woke up a week ago with an image in my head and I enlisted my daughter, always my favourite creative co-conspirator, to help me translate it.
We spent a couple of hours cutting out and decorating these butterflies. I used collage. V used her watercolours. Then we wrote across their wings.
We wrote our hopes and dreams for the coming weeks and months.
We wrote things we’d like to let go of.
We wrote questions that we don’t yet have answers for.
Finally, we stitched our delicate creatures together with gold thread – this part was slightly fiddly – and set them in flight.
I loved watching them turn gently in the breeze.
They are now living here, in the middle of our dining table.
Writing invitation
This weekend, how will you give wings to your words?
What words are you holding close that you’d like to send out into the universe?
What is tugging at your sleeve, demanding to be given colour, form and flight?
What can you tell to the breeze that you could not tell to another human?
Remember, friends: Your creative practice is your resistance. Nothing can take it away from you.
With love,
Sophie
