Dear Writing friends,
This month, as part of our IGNITE theme, we’ve been exploring how to gather small sparks of writing and coax them into flame. Thank you for accompanying me throughout this month. I’ve learned so much from noticing the times when I slowed down and paid attention - and the times when I didn’t.
It’s not always easy, is it?
This month, I also shared a personal essay on writing and grief - and how grief is helping me to make small spaces for writing. I felt hesitant and anxious about sharing this piece - Is it OK to write about this here? Would it be upsetting for people to receive in their email? - but I’ve received some lovely messages from people who are also writing their way through grief and loss and those difficult things that we each have in our own lives. I’m glad that some of you found it helpful.
I’m always conscious, though, that some people may found such writing painful to read. I’m thinking of the best way I can flag this in the future to make sure that we can all take care of ourselves and make decisions about what we choose to read and what we don’t. Please do let me know if you have any ideas or thoughts about this.
It also struck me that this piece is about an aspect of writing that has fascinated me for over twenty years now - and that is, that we are all writing to someone, whether that’s a part of ourselves, or someone else, real or imagined. More on this to come…
