Dear Writing friends,

As you open this letter, I want you to imagine one hundred fragrant rose petals tumbling from the paper and landing on your shoes.

I want you to hear symphonies of rain, or all the branches of the trees pulled taut and singing, or Roberta Flack in sequins crooning ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love,’ or whatever it is that sets you on fire.

And what’s that? Is it the birds outside your window, calling your name? No, not that name. The secret one. The one that today you hear again, as if for the first time. The one that you were always supposed to be known by.

Today, yes, today, you’re reflected in car windscreens and declared on every billboard or corner or hillside you pass on your way to work or school or the shops or the next room or wherever and however it is that the world meets you.

Today’s letter is not just here, in these black squiggles. It is everywhere, to remind you that you are chosen.

You are chosen by me, dear friend, and you are chosen by your writing, by everything that is in you, ready to be named, ready to be known.

All you need to do today is pick up your pen and believe.

But just in case you should doubt it, I’ve enclosed some extra stationery that you can fill in as the mood takes you.

Today, your desires are reciprocated. Love is requited. Wishes are granted.

All you have to do is write.
Lick the envelope.
Seal with a kiss.
Send and receive.
